The MAX, or Metro Area Express, is the first regional express service connecting all of Hampton Roads. It offers commuters an economical, stress-free, fast ride to work. By choosing the MAX, you will spend less on gas and help the environment,making your commute the best part of your day.
Convenience is just around the corner
Park your vehicle at one of the convenient Park and Ride facilities throughout Hampton Roads.Then take one of our MAX routes. Service includes connections between the Southside and Peninsula, as well as connections to major employment destinations, such as Naval Station Norfolk and Northrop Grumman in Newport News.
Make yourself comfortable
The MAX has plush, high-back seats and additional leg room, allowing for extra comfort during your ride. Because the MAX travels along area interstates, you have the luxury of a smooth, quiet commute with few distractions and limited stops.
Surf the web as you ride the MAX!
The MAX gives you access to all of Hampton Roads, and now it’s giving you access to the World Wide Web! By using your laptop or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) on any of HRT’s MAX buses, you can use your travel time to work, surf the web, or check and send e-mails.
Connecting to the WiFi on the MAX is easy. Just double-click your web browser icon. Then, click where it says “Click here to continue.” Once you get to the page that says “You are now connected to the Internet,” you are ready to go!
The MAX Pass
Whether you ride one day per week or everyday, the MAX is the perfect fit for you. Ride once for $3.00 or purchase an all day pass on the MAX for $5.50. Other convenient passes include a Bundle of 5 day passes for $24.75 or a 30 – Day pass for $95.00. MAX passes are available at local farecard outlets and HRT service centers. Seniors, age 60 and over, and Persons with Disabilities are eligible to board the MAX for $1.50. Senior citizens must show the driver a DMV, Medicare, an HRT Half-Fare or an ADA Paratransit ID with a photo ID. Please note that local bus route passes are accepted on the MAX with an additional $1.50 upgrade fee. The upgrade fee for seniors and persons with disabilities with proper ID is $0.75.
Guaranteed Ride Program
Sign up for the Guaranteed Ride Program, a service provided by the TRAFFIX division of Hampton Roads Transit.This program provides a reliable ride back to your point of origin in case you have to work late, leave early or have an emergency and are unable to catch the MAX.
