HRT Launches New Regional Express Bus Service

Hampton, VA—Today, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) today launched the region’s first express bus service designed to carry commuters long distances in a reliable, timely manner.

The MAX, or Metro Area Express, will offer an alternative to driving alone to work by connecting people to the region’s work centers with service that will make minimal stops. In most cases, buses will stop just once before reaching their destination city.

Most express bus coaches are new models that feature high-back seats and a bit more leg room to make the longer trip along the interstate more pleasant. This fall, they will be upgraded with secure Wi-Fi connections

The Max system will be linked to five regional Park and Ride lots, including a new, temporary one at the Oceanfront. Service includes connections to major employment destinations, such as downtown Norfolk, Naval Station Norfolk and Northrop Grumman in Newport News.

“HRT is excited about the launching of our new regional express service,” said HRT President/CEO Michael Townes. “With the price of gas consistently on the rise, the MAX will be Hampton Roads’ commuters’ best option for relief from their pain at the pump.”

HRT is offering the first two weeks of The Max for free. After June 30, the fare will be $3.00 one way. A round trip pass, also called a day pass, can be purchased for $5.50.

Customers do not have to worry about working late and missing the bus. Participants are eligible for HRT’s guaranteed ride program that promises a reliable rider back to your point of origin or if you have an emergency and are unable to wait for The Max.
