Victory Crossing Transfer Station (Portsmouth)
This project consists of the construction of a new bus transfer station from one lane of existing paved roadway southwest of the intersection of McLean Street and Cavalier Boulevard in Portsmouth to replace the bus transfer location currently on McLean Street. The Victory Crossing Transfer Station was conceptualized to support the Victory Village development in Portsmouth, including the New Port community, the Victory Crossing Shopping Center, and eventually the new Tidewater Community College (TCC) Portsmouth campus. Once completed, the new transfer station will support the same route services (Routes 41, 44, 45, 50, and 57) that are operating from the current location on McLean Street, along with the Metro Area Express (MAX) Route 962, which began operating out of Portsmouth in 2008. This project was designed to maximize the efficiency of buses transferring out of this location with no additional impact on the route schedules – and in some cases it will actually lessen travel times since buses will be able to depart from their transfers going in both directions on McLean Street. Furthermore, the new station will feature six brand new bus shelters, sidewalks, and plenty of lighting (14 new light posts) for passengers to safely be dropped off and/or wait for their bus transfers. Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 1, 2010 so that the new transfer station can become fully operational before July 2010. The project is budgeted for $444,821.
